4 Ways That Elance Can Help a Business Flourish

business success

                                  Guest post by Kathy Barber

It doesn’t matter if you have been in business for decades, or you are just starting out, the expenses are on the rise, with no end in sight. It can cause well-established businesses to either downsize, or close the doors. It’s also a reason why some entrepreneurs are having doubts about opening those doors to begin with. Another reason why someone might be reluctant to start up a business right now, is that it can be difficult to keep up with the ever-changing world of technology, legal, and even accounting. And, what about hiring the right people? That can be intimidating enough to walk away from a dream. However, there is a solution that can take away that fear, or at least lessen it a bit.

                                 Guest post by Keir McCarton

There are thousands of blog articles out in the blogosphere that offer help and guides on how to succeed with a small business. The sheer numbers suggests that there is not one single fool proof way to go about things. Success with a small business or in self-employment can only be achieved through experience and listening to the experience of others. Here is a collection of ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ I have taken from my experiences.

Small Business Marketing for Almost Free

                        Guest post by Susie Brown

Getting started in business involves oodles of expenses, many of them unexpected, and all types of other difficulties. Of course, that’s not to say that starting a business isn’t worth doing. If that were true, no businesses would exist. But, with all of the things there are to think about, and all of the new things to learn, and all of the expenses, wouldn’t it be nice if there were a way to do some valuable things for free?

Meet The Perfect Payment Processing Service and Start Accepting Payments with Ease

Guest post by Shanesia Winston, the Queen of Biz Makeovers

As a business owner and a consumer I prefer credit cards when it comes to making payments. It is not that I dislike cash, it is just that I’m not that comfortable carrying it around. As a consumer, I feel more at ease strolling in the shopping mall or dining at my favorite restaurant without having to squeeze a chunk of cash in my cute purse. And with paper money, once you lose it, it’s forever gone and you are left to sob about your misfortune. The last time I misplaced my card; I immediately cancelled it and got a new card very easily. There was absolutely no drama. As a business owner, I realize how convenient it is for clients to be able to pay with their credit cards and I knew as soon as I started my business I knew that I needed to be able to accept credit card payments. Not only was I making it more convenient for my loyal customers, I would also be able to bring in more people that thrive on easy and fast transactions.

And just like any entrepreneur who wants the best service for my clientele, I went through the phase of having to decide how to accept payments from clients. I considered things like service charges, fraud protection, guaranteed on time payments, and more. For a few weeks, I researched a lot of different payment processing companies and looked into their benefits and disadvantages like a hawk. In case you are doing the same right now, let me save you some time and share the information I gathered during my search. Of course, this article comes with updated information about some of the newest payment processing service available.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom Entrepreneurs and Small Biz Owners

                      Happy Mother’s Day Mom Entrepreneurs!

From one mother to another take the time out and enjoy this special day! Pamper yourselves or let others pamper you. Being a Mom is a lot of work, huge responsibilities, and a special club that once you join you will never get out of. Being a mother for me is about sacrifices, special moments, and lots of endless ♥love♥.  For mom entrepreneurs or even working Moms there is an added pressure to not only do well in your desired field, but to also do well as a parent. Spending time away from the family can be difficult —missing games, events, and other important activities can be a very big deal. It is important to find balance in order to excel as a mom in business. Sometimes you may want to include your children and spouse in your entrepreneurial activities. Not only to get more work done, but for family bonding time. Once your loved ones see how much work you take on they will gain a whole level of respect for you. If your children are small and not able to assist (like my 3 little Angels), try to make sure that you are spending as much time as possible with them. Pass up events and activities that are not mandatory to the growth of your business. Be sure to attend the business functions that can aid in taking your business to the next level. Stay at home Moms I salute you too! I have been there and it is ALOT a ton of work…so much work that it pushed me back into entrepreneurship because I find it to me easier!

I found a few great Mother’s Day “things” around the web:

  • 5 Marketing Ideas to Make Your Mother’s Day Profitable by Charlie Gaudet via  www.predictableprofits.com
  • Single Mom Weekly extends its 1st Annual Single Mom Mother’s Day Giveaway with a prize donation from Coach Honorée Corder. There are over $700 in prizes to be given away. Update via PRWeb.com.
  • In honor of Mother’s Day TheLadders.com has created an awesome infographic titled, What It’s Like to Be a Working Mom.

Small Business Owners Visualize Your Way to Public Relations Success

image

Guest Post by Small Biz Diamond Contributor Suzanne Forte

Visions boards are popular for imagining personal goals but did you know that vision boards can also be an effective public relations tool? An excellent resource for brainstorming, vision boards can help small business owners focus on attracting the desired media coverage while reaching new customers.

Start by creating a list of five publications that your customers are most likely to read. Digest these publications daily for at least two weeks. In addition to reading the print version, be sure to sign up for the digital version of the publications and e-newsletters. Additionally research their social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Pay close attention to the name of the writer and frequently used keywords. You should also pay attention to the average word count, sources quoted and media used to support the article including hyperlinks, videos, images, etc. Note and collect articles that include the writer’s email address and telephone number.

Next, cut out desired articles and highlight the information that captured your attention. Be sure to write down how a similar article about your business would attract new customers. For example, an executive profile in a weekly business publication might highlight your unusual hobbies. Readers that share the same hobby might be interested in learning more about you and buying your product or service.

Continue to use articles for inspiration and create a new headline mentioning your company with three relevant facts about your business that would support the headline. Paste your “dream” articles on a large surface and place the board in a highly visible area such as an office or bedroom wall. Review the dream articles daily and use the information when networking and prospecting.

Have you considered using a vision board as a vehicle to get in front of your customers? What publications does your target audience read? How will you stand out? Leave your small biz diamonds in the comments section below.

Q&A with a Winner! Meet Sophie Kovic owner of FlockStocks

image

Sophie Kovic is an Australian small business owner on the rise. She is the owner of FlockStocks, feathered hair extensions made from selectively bred roosters from Whiting Farms in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado. About one year ago when the feather extension craze took flight in the United States, Sophie decided to use her beauty industry experience and small business research to tap into the trend. In the beginning she was not sure exactly what feathers would best suit her customers taste so she shipped out different types of feathers. Sophie found that feathers are extremely hard to come by and she found herself only being able to get feathers from fly fishing stores or directly from fishermen, making for an inconsistent product. As she continued to research feathers and learned more about exactly what her customers wanted she was able to narrow down her search to the farm that produced feathers to suit their needs. In her second month in business, Sophie made over $100,000 with the assistance of Google Adwords. Sophie is also the winner of Shopify’s Build-A-Business contest in the Apparel and Jewelry category. The 25 year-old mom and super savvy small business owner has taken time out of her schedule to share a few small biz diamonds.

Celebrate Earth Day everyday at your small business

image

In honor of Earth Day this post points out why and how every small business owner can begin the process of going green. It is important to note that everyday is Earth Day and business owners should embrace the green movement and practice sustainable living daily, not just for special occasions or marketing opportunities. A small business that goes green; pledges to take an active role in reducing their carbon foot print and saving the environment, saves a significant amount of money from implementing green practices, has the opportunity to receive tax credits, and provides a competitive advantage for the business. To begin your green transition partner with a professional energy auditor that is equipped with the tools and more importantly the knowledge to help a small business owner save money and reduce energy that is currently being wasted. Once your small business has been audited be sure to sit down with your auditor to create a solid sustainability plan that your small business can adhere to.

There are several things that a small business owner can begin implementing on their own before their appointment with the energy auditor, try some of the following:

Q&A with small biz all-star Kelly Dooley, CEO of BodyRock Sport

image

Kelly Dooley, CEO and designer of BodyRock Sport wearing the Tzarina bra.

When Kelly Dooley was unable to find a fashionable and functional active wear line she did not complain, instead she created her own line to suite her needs. In 2009 she introduced BodyRock Sport to the marketplace. Kelly’s innovative and active wear line is not only stylish but it cleverly incorporates functionality equipped with Ipod pockets, tag-less labels, and strategically placed zipper compartments. Each piece in the BodyRock Sport collection is appropriately named after inspirational women —from cancer survivors to Greek goddesses. Last week I introduced Kelly’s phenonmenal success with her brand highlighting; Maria Menounos was spotted wearing BodyRock Sport on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and pop icon Britney Spears wore a $20,000 sports bra from BodyRock Sport. I also mentioned that I had a chance to meet Kelly at the 2012 Stiletto Woman In Business Awards (SWIBA)  where she won the ‘Fashion Business of the Year’ award back in March. I was blown away by Kelly’s extremely positive personality. She also proved to be smart, business savvy, powerful, and extremely stylish —in perfect harmony with her brand. Kelly refers to her customers as ‘BodyRockers’ or women who in her words, “Walk into a room and electrify it with their confidence.” She suggests that all women should, “Be that woman.” I must admit that Kelly IS that woman and her brand and personality reflect that. Kelly is a small business owner that is doing big and amazing things, she took some time out of her busy schedule to share her small business jewels and diamonds.

Vendor Relations: The lifeline to your business

image

Guest Post by Small Biz Diamond Contributor Monica Jackson

In today’s economic and environmental culture our attention has been directed towards “sustainability”. A word not common in many households and businesses nearly 10 years ago—from following our carbon foot print, to recycling and going “Green”, the nature of our everyday lives have changed.

Sustainability is vitally important for businesses and entrepreneurs. We rely on new business and retaining existing business, however, are we cultivating these relationships that help grow and sustain our business? Most businesses today get caught in the hustle and bustle of pushing the next best thing and have forgotten about the fundamental premise of building and maintaining business relationships. This lack of nurturing, cultivation and appreciation has caused many once successful businesses to falter.

Small business on the rise: BodyRock Sport

image

Fashionable and functional active wear for women, BodyRock Sport was spotted on EXTRA! TV Host Maria Menounos during rehearsals on the April 9th, 2012 episode of “Dancing With The Stars”.

image

Extra! TV host Maria Menounos rehearsed for her ‘Dancing With The Stars’ tango performance in a very “stylish and functional” bra and jacket by BodyRock Sport founder and designer Kelly Dooley. Kelly created the BodyRock Sport brand in 2009, after she was fed up looking for the perfect sports bra that would incorporate both style and function. The BodyRock Sport brand is an active wear line has been designed for women that do not want to forfeit being stylish for fitness. Women that want their gym garments to be both fashionable and wearable in everyday situations are turning to BodyRock Sport. The innovative active wear line is functional equipped with built in Ipod pockets, tag-less labels, and zipper compartments. One of the coolest things about BodyRock Sport is that each piece in the collection is appropriately named after inspirational women —from cancer survivors to Greek goddesses.

Similiar to Lady Gaga and her ‘Little Monsters’ or Nicki Minaj and her ‘Barbs’, Kelly refers to her customers as ‘BodyRockers’. They are women who in Kelly’s words, “Walk into a room and electrify it with their confidence. Be that woman.”

I had the chance to meet Kelly back in March at the 2012 Stiletto Woman In Business Awards (SWIBA) and I must admit she is her brand 1000 percent! She walked away (or possibly sprinted) from the awards’ with the Fashion Business of the Year trophy in tote. During our chat I quickly discovered that Kelly is stylish, confident, assertive, powerful, smart, and very positive just as her outward appearance suggests. I really took a liking to her alpha female, sporty, stylish ways. Most of all I respect and admire her business acumen. She is a go-getter and it shows in her personality and brand alike. I caught up with Kelly last week for her small biz diamonds and jewels and she has plenty to share. Check back next week for her Q&A to witness for yourself why I told Kelly she better tell Sara Blakely to make some room for her over there on billionaire’s row. BodyRock Sport is definitely a small biz on the rise. Visit Kelly’s website: bodyrocksport.com and connect on Facebook and Twitter.

Saying "No" to customers can help a small business grow

Domino’s Pizza recently announced the launch of its advertising campaign that will tell customers “No!” if they ask to add or remove toppings from its signature artisan pizzas. The purpose of the the new ad campaign is to position Domino’s as a leading authority for pizza. The company has spent years ”perfecting the balance on our artisan crust toppings,” states the voice-over in the advertisement. This is a bold campaign but is it smart? Should Domino’s or any business really tell customers no? Absolutely!  Small business owners should be prepared to turn down customers if their requests are not strategically aligned with their overall business goals and objectives.

9 Really good reasons small business owners should use a virtual office

image

What is a virtual office?

Before I move onto why a small business owner should have a virtual office, lets make sure everyone has a clear understanding about what a virtual office is. A virtual office is a service that provides an office address (typically at a prime and/or upscale location) and professional reception services without leasing the or buying the actual office space. Clients enter into a service-level agreement in which a virtual office provider will; receive mail, handle and route customer phone calls, a provide the business owner with a place to conduct business, train, staff, hold meetings, and meet with clients.

Cash Mobs: Giving small businesses a financial boost one "secret location" at a time

image

Cash Mobs are the biggest phenomenon in small business news right now. Small businesses in cities across the country and even internationally, are receiving a local financial boost from cash mobbers —organized groups of people that support small businesses. Cash mobs are so unique because the groups meet at a pre-selected location and from there they go to a “secret location”, which is the small business that will be visited. Cash mobbers are expected to spend at least $20 at the secret location. The goal is to get as many people to participate as possible. So 100 people could easily poor $2,000 into the local economy; and 200 people could yield $4,000 to a local small business. If these same groups visited a local business once a week, in a month’s time this would put $8,000 to $16,000 back into the local economy or $96,000 to $192,000 a year!

image

According to the Cash Mobs website:

“Cash Mobs isn’t a political or social organization, a corporation, a movement, or meant to be an answer to economic crisis. By and large, those that organize Cash Mobs are simply people trying to make a positive impact on the businesses in their communities (and have fun while doing it)!”

Typically after the cash mob is over the group will visit a local restaurant and support them as well. Some of the restaurants offer special discounts to the cash mobbers that show a receipt from the cash mob location.

Due to the wide-spread embracing and implementation of Cash Mobs both nationally and internationally, there will be an International Cash Mob Day held on March 24, 2012. People everywhere are encouraged to support their local economies and aid in strengthening their local communities.

The ‘Other’ Reality

What do you get when you mix a group of successful business women, that are lesbians, and they come from diverse backgrounds? A reality show (duh!

A few weeks ago I came across a rather interesting reality show concept, The Other Women of America (TOWOA). It is a reality series that focuses on the diverse lives of American lesbian women. The show is shot in Atlanta, GA and features successful, sophisticated, beautiful women focusing on a multitude of backgrounds (careers and culturally). The producers plan to branch out the series into other cities. The show’s website states:

Case Study: PR for Small Businesses Does Close Sales, But YOU Have to Work It!

I write for Examiner.com as the Atlanta Small Business Examiner. For the month of February I selected a few wedding professionals based in Atlanta, GA to feature for National Weddings Month. One of the wedding professionals that I featured was Nicole Scott-Tate, owner and principal planner of Your Champagne Wishes Events, LLC (pictured below).

Nicole and I had a wonderful interview and her feature turned out great, (take a look). One of things I asked each wedding professional was to include a few tips that they give to the brides and grooms that they work with. The purpose of this was to really have the event professionals shine and stand out with their tips.

Two days ago I received this wonderful email from Nicole:
