5 Military Training Techniques We Can Apply to Business

Military training techniques are often associated with war, although business leaders can learn several useful lessons from them. Discipline, high standards, leadership and diplomacy are just a few of the qualities that comprise a strong and profitable company. A significant number of business ventures and projects are completed through teamwork, so a cohesive unit is crucial. Company owners and managers who implement these techniques frequently see increased profits, better employee performance and an enhanced reputation for their business.

One of the first things that new recruits learn in basic training is that the individual matters less than the overall team. A good number of military operations include finding out information about enemies’ plans and decisions. Units engage in these tactics in order to gain a competitive advantage. Businesses can also benefit from gathering information about competitors’ strategies, plans and existing products. This kind of market research can give a company valuable data for planning new developments that would appeal to a large customer base. As long as this research is conducted within ethical guidelines, it is an advantageous way of keeping a business as competitive as possible.
High Quality is Mandatory
Beginning in their first days of bootcamp, military recruits learn how to do every task with high quality standards. These standards apply to everything from making a bed to assembling a rifle. Communicating standards of excellence to a team of employees will get them to perform their best and to expect more of themselves. Maintaining high quality standards will also lead to repeat business and favorable reviews from customers.
Diplomacy Enhances Reputations
The armed forces also engage in building relationships with other nations in hopes of benefiting both countries. Business owners who seek these same types of productive connections also enhance their companies’ reputations. These relationships can lead to customer referrals, exchanges of industry-related ideas and increased productivity as different businesses exchange needed resources. Humanitarianism is an additional component to be learned from the military because companies who act socially responsible are those that generate the most positive opinions from their surrounding communities. Implementing these techniques from military training does not translate into becoming an authoritarian or excessively demanding leader. This approach instead aims to inspire teams of employees to give every task and venture their best efforts. It also has goals of fostering solidarity and accountability within a given organization.
